Own a DSLR or Mirrorless camera and want to learn how to use it to its full potential? Learn from industry professionals who are passionate about photography and imparting their practical knowledge to the next generation of digital photographers.

This is a face-to-face beginner’s 101 practical guide to your camera and photography fundamentals. Classes are limited to 12 places, so book your place today! The course takes place in the studio in Paola, with loads of practical exercises, visual aids and a MIPP-designed Photography Handbook for students to progress during and after their course finishes.

What to Bring?

• Your DSLR or Mirrorless Camera Body with as many lenses as you own.

• Relevant accessories including a charged battery and memory card. We recommend a minimum of 16GB of storage.

• Your charger just in case you need to top-up your battery and/or a spare battery.

• Your tripod (if you own one) only for Week 7.

• Any snacks or nourishment you wish to have during the course.

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1: Photography Equipment Explained!

This week we will start from scratch, introducing you to the equipment on the market but fundamentally acquaint you with what’s in your hands. What do all these numbers mean and what do these buttons and dials do? From your camera body to lenses and relevant accessories and gadgets to consider down the track, we will begin by setting you up for the rest of the course.

Week 2: The Power of 3 – Part 1! – ISO and Aperture

It is this week, we will introduce you to the 3 elements to exposure – the ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. Understanding these elements in vital to taking control over your camera and cannot be understood in one lesson, so we’ve dedicated two weeks to this. What do each of these elements do? What is an ISO and what is an aperture? How can they be used creatively?

Week 3: The Power of 3 – Part 2 – Shutter Speed and Symbiotic Harmony

It is here where you will begin to have several questions, and this week, we will answer a lot of them all while adding a few to the list. This week we will begin to understand the way the camera works from a technical standpoint, and knowledge is power! What is this shutter speed and what role does it play in photography? How do they work together?

Week 4: Lights Camera Action!

Light is the key ingredient in photography. It’s like life; it can be beautiful, or it can be harsh; it can be philosophical, or it can be literal! The key is working with it, understanding it, and moulding it so that we achieve the results we hoped for. This week, we look at the characteristics of light and show how we can use light to fundamentally capture moments, along with using it as a creative tool to compliment and contrast our subject matter.

Week 5 Part A: Colour and Composition 101

This is where the magic is. The topics of colour and composition are worthy of its own independent course, but at least we have two weeks. It is here we will get you thinking about how colour and the way visual hierarchy aids in the way an image is read. Why is it that we look over here and not there? Is there such a thing as balance within an image? Do certain colours have more visual weighting than others?

Week 6: Field Trip

Photography is both practical and theoretical; without practice, what’s the point? It is here, we come together on location to put all of our learnings to date, into practice. We meet, weather dependent (otherwise postponed to a new date), for two hours experiencing lighting situations that mimic basic to intermediate levels of hardship so that once the course is finished, students will be equipped with adequate information to tackle scenes on their own.

Week 7: Painting the Night Away

Photography is one big light show! This week, we show you how to use light as a paintbrush. We will spend most of this week’s lesson outside, capturing light swirls, words and tracing in an experimental 2 hours of learning. So, let’s get sparkling!

Week 8: DAM! Critique

Unfortunately, it is the last week of the course! DAM stands for Digital Asset Management or in other words, “How do we ensure our files are safe and organised in such a way so that they are found easily and protected from becoming lost?” And why are we learning this at the end? Well, it’s because you were too eager to get right into using your camera! If you have a messy desktop, have numerous doubles and triples, we will work together in providing you with a formula to manage your existing and future assets! We will also dedicate time to feedback on student progress.

AMIPP 2013 – Darrin Zammit-Lupi

Statement of Intent:

IRREGULAR IMMIGRATION

For the past 10 years, I have been reporting and photographing the story of irregular immigration to Malta, the southern-most state in Europe and directly in the path of the migration route from the shores of North Africa to Italy.

In their desperation to escape untenable conditions in their homeland, they embark on a route and in vessels that is at best treacherous. Even when disaster does not strike at sea, the condition of their travel is horrific. Their journeys of desperation represent one of the most horrific, cruel, yet important immigration routes of our time. Untold hundreds have died attempting to make the crossing – the central Mediterranean has become their graveyard.

Over time, I have captured the journey of the immigrants that begins with their rescues far out at sea, to arrival on the island and life in the detention camps through to the open centres where they go to live once released from detention, and life in the community.

Over 18,000 immigrants and asylum seekers have come to Malta in the last ten years, of whom around 5,000 remain on the island, living in detention centres, open centres or in the community. The immigrants claim their intention was never to arrive in Malta – but rather go to Italy where they could easily move on within the European mainland. The influx of immigrants has tested the Maltese people’s reputation as a hospitable people. It has also strained the resources of the Armed Forces of Malta, which is responsible for a rescue region stretching from Tunisia almost as far as Crete to the East, covering some 250,000 square kilometres.

My passion for this story has never faltered since first being exposed to the suffering of these people and the thinly veiled inhumanity in the reaction of first world nations. Even at times when many felt the arrival of immigrants no longer constituted news, I kept at it, drawn by the challenge of coming up with powerful images, trying to go beyond the news to show something different every time that would capture the depth of suffering and embody the vital importance of the overall story in human terms.

All of these photographs were taken on assignment for The Times of Malta and Reuters, using natural available lighting only. Being photojournalism, nothing was set up, re-created or posed – everything was shot as is at that moment in time. Photoshop use was also kept to a minimum as per normal ethical standards on the use of Photoshop in photojournalism.

MIPP GUIDELINES FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS’ & ORGANIZERS’ ETHICS DURING EVENTS

OUR MAIN SPONSORS

My Mentor Programme

One of our primary objectives at MIPP is to promote professional photography. This aim can only be achieved by continuously tutoring and mentoring our younger members, thus giving them the assistance and support they require. To further sustain and maintain the quality and level of our members’ achievements, the MIPP have a specific service called ‘My Mentor’.

The aim of this is to provide a new customized mentoring service to our members. A member who enrols in this programme will be provided with a personal qualified mentor of his/her choice for a period of 6 months. Members can enroll to several sessions repeatedly.  The available mentors regularly change.

Each month the enrolled members will submit two emails with five images each, to their chosen mentor; the latter will provide the necessary feedback on submitted photographs via email.

‘My Mentor’ is not a replacement of the mentoring service already provided to those members who submit a panel for the MIPP qualifications; the panel mentoring is still an ongoing service. Our aim is to have this project working alongside the existing monitoring service and consequently working hand in hand; this will supply our members with an additional facility to further enhance their abilities. All members should benefit from this project, especially those who are new to photography and all those who wish to start aspiring to acquire any of our qualifications.

Payment for this service will be €50, payable in advance. Download Form from here.

Mentoring for Qualifications

© Keith Ellul

When applying for MIPP Qualifications in March or November, the applicant needs to start preparing early and in a structured manner. Leaving things until the last minute is a sure way of failing. If you are not sure that your work is up to any of the required level, simply utilize the benefits of the MIPP mentoring service prior to submitting for a qualification.

This is done in the following manner:

A. Free Mentoring service – only available for fully paid up members:

  1. Applicants must submit online a selection of images that they believe should go into their qualification panel.

(20 jpeg 300 dpi images, 2000 pixels on the longest side not larger than 2 MB per file). The files are to be subsequently numbered 1-20 and are to be sent to submissions@mipp-malta.com .

2. It is necessary for the applicants to decide on the theme of the panel before sending in the images. Naturally, the images submitted must conform to the theme/genre chosen.

3. All applicants are to fill in and submit the appropriate Mentorship Application form.

4. Applicants will receive, through email, an MIPP approved mentor’s evaluation and assessment on whether the level is deemed to be sufficient for the level of qualification. Suggestions will also be given accordingly.

5. Submissions which are not in the correct format will not be assessed. However, an email will be sent to request another submission in the correct format.

6. Replies to submissions take usually fifteen working days.

7. The deadline for Free Mentoring submissions is the 31st July of each year prior to the Qualification judging month of November of the same year, or the 31st October prior to the March judging month.

8. Member applicants can submit a maximum of TWO panels per year for the free Mentoring service.

B. In Depth Mentoring:

  1. Should the applicant need further guidance and more in depth mentoring on a one to one basis, the applicant can choose to engage one of the MIPP official Mentors.

2. Fees for mentoring are of €10 per hour and are to be directly paid to the Mentor.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Mentoring DOES NOT guarantee success but is intended to guide and help the applicant with his Qualification submission.
  • Mentors are NOT at any time to physically edit submitted panel images, or have a decisive influence in their creation.
  • Mentors are to guide and recommend, but the final decision in all areas of a submission is to be that of the entrant. The Mentor MUST NOT judge any panels that he/she has mentored and it is the Mentor’s responsibility to inform the co-ordinator of the Qualifications judging panel. Participants are to contact the MIPP committee to be notified on the official Mentors appointed each year.
